The Atwater High School Physical Education Department is dedicated to the contribution to each student’s growth and development in the physical, cognitive, and social domains through a movement-based curriculum. This involves delivery of a planned, sequential instructional program that teaches skills, behaviors, and knowledge. These are necessary to function at an adequate level of competence enabling each student to be an active, physically and mentally fit individual throughout life.

REQUIREMENTS – Students are required to:
Physical Education Uniforms and Non-suit Policy:
- Be in locker room before the tardy bell.
- Report to roll call within 7 minutes after tardy bell.
- Dress daily in PE uniform. NO EXCEPTIONS (including medical notes or notes from home).
- Report all injuries to Physical Education Teacher immediately.
Physical Education Uniforms and Non-suit Policy:
- Student Responsibility Is Preparation for Life.
- All Students receive two copies of the Physical Education Non-suit Policy. The policy will be presented visually and verbally on the first or second day of school. The students and parents/guardians will sign, date and return copy to their Physical Educator. Students entering physical education at a later date will be give the same information. The Physical Education Policy given to the student(s) is the non-suit warning.
- Physical Education Uniforms are as followed:
- Shoes - laced or velcro athletic shoes (no platforms, slip-ons, or roller shoes).
- Socks - optional (nylons are not acceptable).
- Shirts - plain white t-shirt, designated Atwater logo shirt, or any award PE shirt.
- Shorts – blue, black, grey athletic gym shorts (no jeans, zippers, or buttons).
- Sweatpants and Sweatshirts – blue, black, grey or any AHS logo.
- NO JACKETS, SWEATERS, OR LONG COATS MAY BE WORN.
- Student responsibility is to take home physical education clothes on Friday and return on Monday with clean clothes and shoes prepared for class.
- All students will dress out daily, including those with a medical note, and will help with the progress of the class any way they can.
- Clean loaner clothes are available daily to all students.
- Physical Education loaner clothes are only provided on an emergency basis and to be requested the first, two minutes of the dressing time in Physical Education Offices. Students are required to present their current I.D. Card when borrowing clothes. Excessive borrowing will be considered a lack of responsibility on the student’s part and thus result in disciplinary action. You are required to be responsible and be prepared for physical education by bringing the proper clothes.
- If a student wears street clothes under the physical education uniform it is considered a non-suit.
- If a student refuses to dress out or wears street clothes under their physical education uniform it is considered defiance and a non-suit will result in the following consequences for the 2014-2015 school year:
- First non-suit: Call to Parent/Guardian, Warning and posted with In School Suspension Instructor.
- Second non-suit: Call to Parent/Guardian, In School Suspension Instructor issues after school detention to student.
- Third non-suit: Refer student to Counselor. In School Suspension Instructor assigns student Saturday School.
- Fourth non-suit: Parent, teacher, student, counselor conference. In School Suspension Instructor assigns student Saturday School.
- Fifth non-suit: In School Suspension Instructor assigns student Saturday School.
- Sixth non-suit: Student receives and “F” for the current semester. Parent Conference with counselor, Associate Principal. Student removed from class for the rest of the semester.

GRADING POLICY
- Participation: includes the following: warm-up exercises, cardio-vascular, involvement in curricular activities, character counts, and cooperation with teachers and peers.
- Skill: teacher observation of skills performed, skills tests, and improvement.
- Fitness Folders: reading assignments, homework, posting cardio and weight training information.
- Cardio: Improvement in cardio vascular, endurance and respiratory fitness.
- Knowledge: grades will be determined by teacher observation, demonstrations, assignments and written tests.

MEDICAL POLICY
A written Doctor’s excuse is required for a period longer than three days within a grading period.
Long-term medicals from a physician (beyond 5 days) may be referred and screened by the Adapted
Physical Education Instructor. In meeting the needs of all students in physical education, the Merced
Union High School District provides an Adapted Physical Education program. The program protects
students with disabilities, gives special attention to meet each students’ needs and conditions under
the supervision of a physical education teacher with proper credentials.

*Consequence- referral for being out of bounds.

- PE Complex - any student found in an unsupervised room or area without an instructor will be referred to the proper Associate Principal.
- Gym - only tennis shoes are allowed on the gym floor.

GENERAL INFORMATION
- Personal Hygiene - showers are recommended; clothes should be washed at least once a week and wear you deodorant and reapply after class.
- Physical Education Graduation Requirements – you must pass the required 20 units of physical education.
